Graphite Electrode Ash Content

Graphite electrodes play a vital role in the metallurgical sector. They are used as a source of electrical energy for heating and melting charge in the electric-arc furnace, which produces steel. They are known for having a high mechanical strength, good conductivity, low electric resistivity, and resistance to thermal shock. These electrodes go through a complicated manufacturing process, and they must meet several specifications such as ash contents.

Graphite Electrode is manufactured by a series of heat treatments and kneading procedures. The final product's diameter, density and amount of ash are its main characteristics. The ash in the material can have a major impact on the final product. High ash content can cause the electrode to break under stress and may lead to corrosion in a harsh environment. It is therefore important to choose a graphite with a low content of ash for your application.

The ash content is the percentage of noncarbon elements in a graphite product. This can be measured using a variety methods, such as X ray fluorescence and X ray diffraction. A graphite that contains low levels of ashes is useful in many industries, such as aerospace and automotive. Choosing the correct graphite block will help you achieve optimal results and performance with your equipment.

To reduce the ash content of the raw materials, the char concentrates are demineralised, carbonised and then subjected to graphitization. This step ensures that the graphite is of high purity. In this stage, the ashes in the raw material are removed to prevent clogging of graphitization chamber. The ashes are also analysed using ICP-MS (Nexion 300, Perkin Elmer, USA) or ICP-OES (Optima 8000DV, Perkin Elmer, USA) to characterize the impurity element content of the raw materials.

The green baked products are further characterised by a series of tests, including XRF, XRD and SEM/EDS, to verify their suitability for use in HTR-PM pebble fuel elements. These tests showed that the ash content and the impurity levels of the purified NFGP/AGP met the technical requirements of the HTR PM.
