GPC is a versatile carbon-based material that can be used in many different industrial applications. Its high stability and purity makes it a valuable resource to industries that use it for their manufacturing processes. GPC is created by heating crude petroleum coke at an extremely high heat to align the carbon molecules and improve its performance. This process is called graphitization.
A typical GPC consists of more than 95% carbon and exhibits good electrical conductivity. It has exceptional thermal stability, and it can withstand temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius without degrading. As a result, GPC is an important source of Carbon for a wide range of applications. GPC can also withstand the elements and is highly resistant against corrosion.
Anodes are made from petroleum coke, which has a high content of carbon and good thermal stability. This application also calls for a high-quality, low-sulfur coke. Moreover, the coke must be free from volatiles. This is not always feasible using convenitonal methods, as petroleum distillates tend to have a high volatiles content. Consequently, the conventional method for producing petroleum coke usually involves distillation and separation of volatile products, which can be expensive.
GPC can also be used to produce moderator graphite, which is used in nuclear reactors. In this instance, the coke undergoes a graphitizing treatment to transform it into material that can cool nuclear reactors or prevent nuclear fission. Conventional methods for preparing petroleum coke suitable for moderator graphite require the coke to be calcined, which is done by grinding and sitting it. This produces a powder that is mixed with a binding agent to form shapes, and then heat treated to produce graphite. This is an expensive and labor-intensive procedure.
A new process for producing moderator carbon graphite from petroleum coke has been proposed. It will reduce costs and improve efficiency. The proposed process involves heating up the crude oil at a high temperature prior to distillation. This increases the yields of coal that can be used for the moderator Graphitizing Process. The modified coke has a lower volatiles and higher graphitic crystal content than conventionally prepared oil coke.
