Petroleum coke is a solid byproduct of the petroleum refining process. It is used to produce carbon electrodes for the aluminum industry, graphite electrodes for steel production, as fuel in solid fuel power boilers, and as a fuel in cement kilns. It is also a useful reducing agent in the iron ore steel production process. Its low cost and high carbon content make it a valuable feedstock for many industries.
During oil refinement, crude oils are separated into various hydrocarbons by a series of complex steps and chemical reactions. Crude oil is heated to extremely high temperatures and pressed under intense pressure in a coking unit to break down large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller ones. The heavy fractions are separated from the lighter fractions and further processed to form petroleum coke, also known as petcoke.
The petroleum coke from the coker unit can be classified as fuel-grade or anode-grade, depending on its sulfur and metals concentrations. The coke directly out of the coker unit is called green coke and is considered fuel-grade. The green coke is further processed by heating it to remove moisture and volatiles in a calcination process. The resulting calcined petroleum coke (also called reformed petroleum coke, or RPPC) has an extremely high fixed carbon content and low sulfur and volatiles content.
Coke is further refined into a highly crystalline material called graphitized petroleum coke, or GPC. This is a crucial material for refractory applications, as it has exceptional thermal shock resistance and conductivity. It is also an excellent lubricant. The GPC is then used in the steel production process to reduce oxygen content and improve the quality of finished steel products.
GPC has a very low sulfur and nitrogen content, which makes it an environmentally friendly and safe alternative to coal for power generation. In addition, its high carbon content provides a powerful source of energy for smelting iron ore and producing steel.
